Medicare is now offering important opportunities for organizations to develop and implement innovative approaches to CME. The U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, (CMS) is designing "Voluntary Chronic Care Improvement under Traditional Fee-for- Service Medicare" to develop and test new strategies to improve quality of care and beneficiary and provider satisfaction for chronically ill Medicare patients with congestive heart failure, diabetes, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Organizations that will be selected to participate in this program will provide patients and their physicians information and information tools to increase adherence to evidence-based care. CMS has indicated particular interest in programs that have a "track record of success in engaging beneficiaries' physicians and other providers in information sharing."
